Austin Water Equipment Operator


Minimum Qualifications:


Education and/or Equivalent Experience:

  •  Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus three (3) years of experience in equipment operations, including one (1) year of experience in specialized utility equipment.


 Licenses or Certifications:

  • Current Texas Class A Commercial Driver License. May require specific endorsements.
  • To be considered for employment in this position, applicants must comply with Department of Transportation Federal Regulations and the City of Austin Drug Policy.
  • Positions in the Lift Stations Division must be certified for Respiratory Protection and Confined Space Entry within six (6) months of employment.


Preferred Qualification:

  • Experience pulling tractor trailers
  • Experience driving standard/manual transmission equipment
  • Extensive driving experience on City roadways
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment safely, productively and efficiently

This position will support the removal and transport of raw and digested wastewater from remote wastewater treatment plants to appropriate dump sites and designated manholes.


This position requires a Texas Class A Commercial Driver License with Tanker endorsement at time of hire.


Driving Requirement: This position requires a Current Texas Class A Commercial Driver License, may require specific endorsements, or the ability to acquire one by your hire date. This position will require travel and mobility between multiple plants and the disposal site. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, hold a current applicable driver’s license, and have no more than six (6) points assessed on Driver Record Evaluation (DRE). Please review the City of Austin Driving Standards to assess your driving record. DRE will be verified through the Department of Public Safety. Job Offer is contingent on having a driving record that meets the City’s Driver Record Evaluation Standards.


Physical Requirements: 

  • Selected candidate will be required to complete and pass a pre-employment physical exam to be considered for this position, which includes a Functional (FC) strength/agility test.

If you are selected to interview:

  • Your skill level in the operation of a standard/manual transmission tanker truck will be assessed with a required minimum passing score of 70%.


If you are selected as a top candidate:

  • Verification of your education (which may include high school graduation or GED, undergraduate and/or graduate degrees) will be required. You must provide proof of education from an accredited organization/institution.
  • And are in the military or a veteran, you will need to provide a copy of your DD-214 prior to confirming a start date.


All Austin Water worksite locations are tobacco-free. Use of tobacco products and/or e-cigarettes is not permitted on any AW worksite – including construction sites, parking lot, garage or in any personal vehicle located on the premises.

This position will report to one of the following locations based on business needs.

Walnut Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant

7113 FM 969, Austin, TX 78724


Pay Range:

$19.82 – $25.27 per hour


Hours:

Monday – Friday; 6:00 AM to 2:00 PM with Saturday work as designated based on utility needs.

This position requires employee to be able to work weekends, holidays, night shift, on-call, and emergency call-back assignments. Work hours are subject to change to accommodate business needs of the organization.
