  • Water Treatment Plant Operations: TCEQ Class B Surface Water License or higher.

This position will supervise the operations and maintenance of an up-flow water treatment plant with a staff of up to 20 employees and assist in various construction related projects.

Technical Licensure:

  • This position requires a Class B (or higher) Surface Water License from Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).

Driving Requirement:

  • This position requires a valid Texas Class C Driver License or the ability to acquire one by your hire date. External New Hires must meet the City of Austin’s Driver Record Evaluation (DRE) requisite. To be considered for a driving position, applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months.

Confined-Space Entry & Respiratory Protection Requirements:

  • Candidates must be able to work in environments which may have hazardous atmospheres, or in confined spaces where there is limited or restricted means for entry and exit, or where the activities of an employee are hindered.
  • Candidates must be able to qualify for the Utility’s Respiratory Protection Program.
  • Candidates must be clean shaven to meet the Utility’s Respiratory Protection Program guidelines which requires the use of Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA).


Physical & Pre-Employment Testing Requirements:

  • This position will require that you be able to perform duties with confidence climbing heights of up to 200 feet on ladders that support up to 300 lbs., descending into confined spaces up to 100 feet deep with the use of a SRL Body Harness that supports up to 283 lbs., and lifting and/or carrying equipment or supplies weighing up to 50 lbs., unassisted.
  • Selected candidate will be required to complete and pass a pre-employment physical exam and a Functional (FC) strength/agility test (with or without accommodations) to be considered for this position. Candidates must be able to qualify for Austin Water’s Respiratory Protection Program.

Pay Range: $30.14 – $37.68

Hours: 

  • Monday – Friday; 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM; schedule may vary based on business needs.
  • This position is considered essential personnel and may be required to work during inclement weather and on weekends and holidays. Overtime, callback, and on-call may be required based on business necessity.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience supervising a staff of 10+ employees.
  • Background in the repair and maintenance of plant equipment to include pumps, gear boxes, motors, valves, etc.
  • Background in operations of an up flow water treatment plant and familiarity with TCEQ regulations.
  • Experience with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) such as INFOR or other work order management software and proficient in Microsoft Office, Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Knowledge of basic purchasing practices and procedures.

  2. Reviews and prioritizes projects and work activities.

  4. Monitors programs for effectiveness and accomplishment of goals.
  5. Uses automated data systems to schedule activities; and enter, retrieve, track, analyze, and monitor data.
