Summary

The salary range for this position is $24.53-$32.87/hr, depending upon experience.


Summary: Inspects residential and commercial construction plans, ensuring structural, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical compliance with building, fire, and other related codes.

Essential Duties & Required Qualifications

For Building Inspector, Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Make on site inspections during all phases of construction to ensure building compliance with various codes, including Southern Building Code Congress International, National Electric Code, and standard building, gas, plumbing, mechanical, and fire codes, and verifies compliance with zoning and other ordinances.
  • Issue, approve, and assess fees for general, electrical, plumbing, and gas permits and licenses prior to construction.
  • Maintain computer records and report concerning inspections, licenses, permits, certificates, etc.
  • Consult with engineers, architects, builders, and contractors to discuss plans and compliance with various codes.
  • Answer questions in person and on telephone regarding, building ordinance compliance, and citizens' complaints.
  • Provide customer service to other departments and public as needed.
  • Perform on site license checks of plumbers, electricians and others that are required to be licensed under city ordinance or State Plumbing License Law

 For Senior Building Inspector, Essential Duties and Responsibilities include all of the above, plus the following:

  • Issue, approve, and assess fees for general, electrical, plumbing, and gas permits and licenses prior to construction.
  • Prepare and write departmental reports and correspondence.
  • Conduct required inspections during building condemnation procedures.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
