Under the direction of the Vice President of Finance/CFO, the Controller plans, directs, and oversees the financial matters of the YMCA of Austin in a manner that helps ensure the Association fulfills its mission while meeting its fiduciary obligations. You are responsible for all accounting operations including day-to-day accounting functions, supervision of accounts payable and collections and billing, maintenance of an accurate system of accounting records, and a comprehensive set of controls designed to mitigate risk, enhance the accuracy of the association’s reported financial results, and ensure that reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles.

 

Salary: $95,000 - $105,000 per year, depending on experience. Full benefits package including dental, vision, health insurance, and employer-matched retirement plan upon reaching eligibility.    

 

What are the details?

Fiduciary Leadership (75%)

  • Financial Planning & Analysis
  • Develops and maintains measurement systems and reporting for financial key performance indicators and strategic plan objectives.
  • Monitors financial operations, prepares monthly analysis and financial reports for the Board, executive staff, and operations staff.
  • Provides financial analysis and guidance upon request from executive and operations staff for daily operations and the Association’s strategic decision-making process.
  • Assist with the development of the annual operating budget, including all branch budgets. Works closely with operations staff to ensure that branch budgets are well-planned, realistic, and prepared in a timely manner.
  • Assist the VP of Finance/CFO with the evaluation of current business models and efforts to modify or redesign business models where necessary.
  • Supports Board Treasurer with preparation for monthly Budget and Finance Committee meetings.
  • Controllership
  • Maintain official financial records of the Association to meet legal and Association requirements.
  • Reviews, updates, and/or develops internal control systems for the YMCA’s financial processes, ensuring both appropriate design and actual effectiveness of the controls.
  • Ensures accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and year-end close in accordance with current accounting standards and best practices in non-profit accounting.
  • Prepares and/or reviews accounting entries as necessary.
  • Oversees monthly reconciliations for all accounts including bank, investments, payroll (Paycom), membership (DAXKO), and development (Raiser’s Edge).
  • Oversees governmental reporting and other internal/external reports to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal reporting requirements.
  • Oversees compliance with procurement and lease processes.
  • Oversees the annual financial audit by independent accounting firm including periodic updates throughout the year to keep them informed of changes in the Accosication.
  • Treasury
  • Monitors all banking and financing agreements and processes, including bank covenant reporting. 
  • Ensures security compliance with PCI (credit card processing).
  • Assist with cash management and forecasting.
  • Contracts & Vendors
  • Manages systems and processes related to contracts, vendor relationships, and documentation.
  • Tax
  • Oversees the timely preparation of Form 990 and other tax returns.

Performance Achievement & Results (25%)

  • Hold finance team accountable for achieving at high levels to meet strategic goals and objectives.
  • Responsible for developing and meeting Strategic Plan metrics, and Objectives and Key Results (OKRs).
  • Implements a goal-based leadership approach (OKR methodology) and ensures the finance department is actively working towards supporting organizational level objectives and key results.
  • Models inclusive leadership behaviors and embraces all dimensions of diversity – building strong teams that apply their diverse skills and perspectives to our mission.
  • Responsible for hiring, coaching, and managing all direct reports and ensuring alignment with association people practices for all positions within their organizational structure.
  • Conducts Cycle Check-ins and the Annual Check-In with direct reports to ensure progress with OKRs, provide ongoing coaching and feedback, and discuss development opportunities.

What you bring to the Cause:

  • Education & Experience:
  • You have a bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 7 years of progressive responsibility in accounting and financial management including staff management
  • CPA required
  • Possess strong knowledge and understanding of accounting, budgeting, and cost control principles including generally accepted accounting principles, financial and accounting reporting systems, and federal and state financial regulations. Additionally, you have expertise in general business matters including budget development, financial reporting, cash management, business taxes, banking, and debt financing instruments. You have knowledge of short and long-term budgeting and forecasting.
  • You have the ability to analyze financial data and prepare financial reports, statements, and projections, and motivate teams to produce quality materials within tight timeframes, and simultaneously manage several projects.
