General description

The Information Management and Analytics Team in the Information Technology Division is looking for a Data Warehouse Architect and BI Administrator to provide data warehouse project leadership and transform business requirements into long-term data architecture solutions. You will  interact with Development, Business and Technical team members to build data views and architecture. Your day-to-day will involve analyzing and preparing data, reporting needs and other requirements from customers and developing/implementing supporting data management jobs and business information layers. Work will also involve supporting the upkeep and administration of BI application systems. This position is part of a team of people who are open-minded and collaborative, adaptable, dedicated to their craft and aren’t afraid to roll up their sleeves. You would be a great fit for this role if you are self-motivated, resourceful, can deliver results to spec and work well with a team.


Work Hours

8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., 40-hour week, Monday – Friday. May occasionally work evenings, weekends and/or holidays. Application support activities periodically require on-call responsibilities or work during non-standard hours. Hours may change based on business needs.

Teleworking may be considered if certain working conditions are met. The candidate must have permanent residency within the state of Texas and must be able to meet in office requirements, which can vary among different sections (i.e. report to office 1 day/month, 1day/week, etc.). Travel reimbursements are not provided for teleworking.



Minimum Qualifications 

• Bachelor's degree.

• Five (5) years of work experience as a developer using Business Intelligence visualization software in a data warehouse environment including three (3) years in Relational Database environment (SQL Server, DB2, Oracle).

• Five (5) years of modern data warehouse architecture experience

• Five (5) years of work experience as an administrator in a BI reporting environment.

 

Preferred Qualifications 

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems or Management Information Systems.

• Oracle or MS SQL Server developer 

• Qlik Administrator and/or Developer 

• Qlik Certification in Administration and/or Developer 

• Relational database modeling, especially Entity Relationship Diagramming and normalization, and Data Flow Diagrams

 

 

Substitutions

One (1) additional year of the full-time minimum experience as stated above may substitute for each year (30 semester hours) of the required education with a maximum of 120 semester hours (four years).



In this role you will:

Database Administration & ETL (Extract, Transform, Load)

• Provide strategic direction for building an enterprise data warehouse environment for the agency.

• Designs, implements, and supports data warehousing for enterprise reporting.

• Understands data warehouse Metadata concepts, tools and different data warehouse methodologies. 

• Defines interfaces, functional specifications, relational and dimensional model and physical design. 

• Responsible for the ongoing architecture and design of the data warehouse, data mart, and reporting environments.

• Programming of ETL tool with business rules to be applied to data from source input to target data repository, automating data extraction/load programs to run on regular schedule

• Drive peer to peer code reviews and unit testing & QC activities within the team

• Establish and use data integration standards and best practices including source versioning system and production release processes

• Assist Business Analysts to gather and review technical requirements

• Assist in creating technical documentation of ETL Specs, File layouts etc. to maintainability and clarity of developed set up

• Assist in developing and maintaining in ETL architecture following industry standards and best practices

Technical Administration

• Upgrades, administers and maintains BI environments in addition to maintain domain and user administration 

• Oversees the functionality of BI environment(s), the implementation of technology solutions, the development of server upgrade plans and procedures, and the installation of system software 

• Oversees and provides guidance/recommendations in troubleshooting and solving complex problems related to system software and hardware incident and problem calls, and the processing of service requests and tasks 

• Provides proactive technical advice, assistance, recommendations and status reports to management 

• Develops, tests and implements advanced visual dashboards via BI Dashboards

• Facilitates work sessions with stakeholders to understand data integration requirements.

• Translates business requirements into technical specification documentation.

• Supports end-user Business Intelligence requirements, define end-user requirements, and translates end-user requirements into finished working queries, reports and data universes.

• Trains other team members in reporting tools.

• Meets with customers to determine data warehousing and reporting requirements.

• Translates requirements into database and universe design.

• Clearly defines ‘best practices’ for performance and usability of universe.

• Provides knowledge transfer to junior staff on BI best practices.

Data Visualization 

• Create reporting visualizations utilizing data from a multitude of data sources including data warehouse, third party and spreadsheets

• Design and develop stored procedures and views necessary to support production and self-service reporting 

• Develops Qlik data visualization and reporting data structures 

• Work in partnership with foundation business users and subject matter experts to understand and develop report requirements, including report mockups 

• Develop and demo proof of concepts to IT audience, and business users 

• Document and Share expertise and best practices related to data visualization 

• Provide input into the definitions of standard templates and developer guideline
