Summary

Maintains and operates the entire City’s related facilities/equipment within the water and wastewater utility system in a safe, effective and efficient manner, using technical expertise, practices and servicing required for plant equipment, lift stations, electrical techniques and safety procedures. Operator must be able to be scheduled for “on-call” rotation and is subject to after hour call outs. This position is subject to DOT Random Drug and Alcohol testing.

Essential Duties & Required Qualifications

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Required to maintain high voltage electrical (480v or higher) with knowledge of Industrial Electrical processes (i.e. power distribution, motor controls, lighting, etc.) Programmable Logic Controller (PLC), Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) 
  • Troubleshoots and performs complex technical repairs on major machinery and mechanical equipment at the city’s water and two wastewater treatment plants and associated facilities.
  • Maintains and operates electrical distribution systems, 11 100kW -750 kW stationary and 2 mobile (trailer mounted) generators.
  • Tear down units, determine extent of trouble, repairs or replaces defective parts of wiring and reassemble. Disassemble motors, clean, repair and replace work or defective parts or wiring; adjust or replace brushes, bearings commentators, etc., and reassemble.
  • Make proper field connections for forward or reverse motor rotation as required. Install and wire motors for a variety of standard and special purpose machines and equipment; make proper connections to panels, electrical units, etc.
  • Install wiring circuits in all parts of the City of Leander W/WW facilities such as new lighting, power lines, various alterations. Install all types of conduit, making bends, threading and reaming where necessary. Repair switches, replace fuses, bulbs; make repairs to portable electric tools, fans and other equipment.
  • Use care to plan and accomplish work in various areas with a minimum of interference
  • Make assigned checks and inspection of electrical equipment, controls and installation in all parts as a matter of preventative maintenance and report findings to supervisor and take corrective action.
  • Create and maintain a preventative maintenance schedule log on equipment and controls.
  • Detect unusual conditions, defective material or faulty operation and report to supervisor. Duties include the performance of various other maintenance, installation and repair operations
  • Work involves a wide range of operations requiring skill and knowledge of the electrician's trade to wire complicated electrical circuits and where the understanding of operating principles of controls and other electrical equipment is necessary to insure efficient installation, maintenance and repair.
  • Maintains good housekeeping at job sites and assigned areas.
  • Operates company vehicle.
  • Operates hand tools and equipment including welding machine, air compressor, jackhammer, forklift and other related equipment.
  • Monitors inventory of materials and equipment. Recommends and specifies products needed and requisitions approved equipment and maintenance supplies.
  • Create and maintains an inventory log of current and purchased tools and testing equipment.
  • Maintains assigned truck in proper working condition and ensure all tools, testing equipment are organized and maintained and in safe operating condition.
  • The ability to perform on-call duties by responding to water or wastewater facilities/equipment failures 24/7; repair issues at night or during storm events where electrical and mechanical failure can occur.

Required Education and/or Experience:

High School Graduation or G.E.D. and two to three years related experience and/or training, or an Associate's degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Preferred Education and/or Experience:

Associate's degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or four to five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Possess a current State of Texas Journeyman (or higher) Electrician's License. Must have a valid Texas Driver’s License at time of hire. Must have a basic first aid certificate or the ability to obtain one within one year of the hire date. Possession of a valid Texas Class B CDL or the ability to obtain one within 6 months of the hire date; must obtain a TCEQ Class “I” Collection License or a TCEQ “D” Water License within 9 months of hire date. Must maintain appropriate licenses and certificates.

Equipment, Machines, Tools and Work Aids: 

Ability to operate heavy (vehicular) construction equipment such as dump truck, bucket lift truck, motor grader, backhoe, chainsaw, shovel, two-way radio, telephone, computer, measuring devices, meters (pH, Dissolved O2, Chlorine).

Steel-toed leather boots, steel-toed rubber boots, gloves, eye protection, head protection, safety vest, and ear protection.
