Position Overview

Since 1912, Austin Water has been committed to provide safe, reliable, high quality, sustainable and affordable water services to customers in the Austin area. In 2011, Austin Water launched the Renewing Austin Program focusing on replacing and upgrading aging water distribution infrastructure to ensure the reliability and quality of Austin’s water supply. Over the past 10 years, the Renewing Austin Program has successfully replaced and relocated over 100 miles of water mains.

Austin Water currently has an opening for an engineer to serve in the role of an Austin Water Sponsor. AW assigns a Project Sponsor to every renewal project to provide management and coordination of the project, and to oversee AW’s interests in the project. AW Sponsors understand and navigate the CIP process which allows us to replace our aging infrastructure. AW has many CIP ongoing at the same time at various stages of planning, design, and construction. AW Sponsors work with different entities to ensure these projects are completed on time and within budget.


Minimum Qualifications:

The position will be filled at one of the following levels depending upon qualifications:


Graduate Engineer A:

  • Education and/or Equivalent Experience: Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Engineering or in a field related to the job.
  • Licenses and Certifications Required: None.


Graduate Engineer B:

  • Education and/or Equivalent Experience: Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Engineering or in a related field, plus two (2) years of experience in engineering.
  • Licenses or Certifications: State of Texas Engineer-In-Training Certification.


Engineer A:

  • Education and/or Equivalent Experience: Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Engineering or in a field related to the job, plus four (4) years of engineering experience acquired before and/or after licensing as a professional engineer.
  • Licenses or Certifications: Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) in the State of Texas; or if currently licensed in another state, must have the ability to obtain a Texas P.E. license within six (6) months of employment.


Engineer B:

  • Education and/or Equivalent Experience: Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in a field related to engineering, plus six (6) years of experience in engineering acquired before and/or after licensing as a professional engineer.
  • Licenses or Certifications: Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) in the State of Texas; or if currently licensed in another state, must have the ability to obtain a Texas P.E. license within six (6) months of employment.


Engineer C:

  • Education and/or Equivalent Experience: Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Engineering or in a field related to the job, plus eight (8) years of engineering experience acquired before and/or after licensing as a professional engineer.
  • Licenses or Certifications: Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) in the State of Texas; or if currently licensed in another state, must have the ability to obtain a Texas P.E. license within six (6) months of employment.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering.
  • Texas Professional Engineer License or Engineer in Training License.
  • Experience in capital improvement project planning and management related to water and wastewater lines.
  • Experience working successfully with state and local government agencies and departments in underground utility design and construction projects involving major road reconstruction requiring relocation of water and wastewater lines along State Highways and County roads. Experience in relocation of water and wastewater lines along new proposed light rail alignment is a plus.
  • Experience in project management and sponsorship, overseeing projects related to design, construction and rehabilitation of water and wastewater lines including reviewing and evaluating. Requests for Information (RFI’s) submitted by contractors.
  • Ability to travel to more than one work location.


Hours:

Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, with some flexibility.

May work other hours to meet business needs.


Pay Range:

This position will be filled at one of the following levels depending upon candidate qualifications:

  • Graduate Engineer A: $29.83 to $38.78 per hour
  • Graduate Engineer B: $31.62 to $41.11 per hour
  • Engineer A: $33.52 to $43.58 per hour
  • Engineer B: $35.53 to $46.19 per hour
  • Engineer C: $37.30 to $49.43 per hour

Travel:

If you are selected for this position and meet the Driver Safety Standards in the City of Austin Driver Safety Program, you may drive when necessary to multiple locations as part of your regular job duties. Otherwise, you are responsible for getting to and from these locations.
