Graduate Engineer A, B or Engineer A or B (Infrastructure Management)

Position Overview:

This Engineer position is part of the Infrastructure Management Division at Austin Water. The ideal candidate should have experience with Project Management, delivering CIP infrastructure projects, familiarity with infrastructure maintenance and operations practices, and have skills in data analysis and management. This position will serve as a representative of Austin Water, participating in public and utility meetings and workshops. Strong collaborator and organization skills are needed to oversee and/or lead the work of Austin Water teams and contractors. Strong communication skills are needed to disseminate asset management policies and standards and facilitate data reporting. Strong writing and documentation skills are needed to create and refine workflows, digital forms and templates for data capture, interim repositories, and permanent enterprise databases.


This position will be filled at one of the following levels depending upon candidate qualifications: 

  • Graduate Engineer A: $29.69 to $38.59 per hour 
  • Graduate Engineer B: $31.47 to $40.91 per hour 
  • Engineer A: $33.36 to $43.36 per hour 
  • Engineer B: $35.36 to $45.96 per hour 


 Education and/or Equivalent Experience:

  • Graduate Engineer A: Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Engineering or in a field related to the job.


  • Graduate Engineer B: Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Engineering or in a field related to the job, plus two (2) years of experience in engineering. License and Certifications Required: Texas: Engineer - In Training Certification.


  • Engineer A: Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Engineering or in a field related to the job, plus four (4) years of experience in engineering. License and Certifications Required: Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of Texas.


  • Engineer B: Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Engineering or in a field related to the job, plus six (6) years of experience in engineering. License and Certifications Required: Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of Texas.


Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

  1. Assist in preparation and maintenance of design drawings, diagrams, charts, databases plans and permits under the supervision of a professional engineer. Development of proposals for impacts and performing preliminary and final designs and/or prepares design criteria for assigned projects.
  2. Assists in the preparation of standards, equipment specifications, design procedures, test procedures as it relates to the standardization and engineering policies and practices. Reviews and provides assistance in the evaluation and recommendation for job safety procedures.
  3. Coordinates and provides a variety of technical information under the guidance of a professional engineer to customers by contacts with personnel to include inter and intra departmental administrative, engineering and construction personnel, other government agencies, contractors, consultants and the public to exchange information, coordinate work, answer questions and respond to complaints.
  4. Use computerized software programs, ink or pencil drafting to prepare drawings and maps to provide technical advice and guidance to assigned work or project. Develop, analyze and generate technical reports, correspondence and official documents.
  5. Assist in the preparation of preliminary, periodic and final estimates of quantities, materials, equipment, labor and facilities for the preparation of budgets, programs, schedules, partial and final contract payments and other purposes for various projects.
  6. Conduct field inspections of work done by contractors to ensure compliance with plans and specifications. Draft and recommend contract change orders and payments for approval.
  7. Perform statistical analysis to ensure specifications are within established guidelines.

  • Knowledge of engineering and design principles applicable to fields.
  • Knowledge of mathematical techniques such as trigonometry, calculus, and coordinate geometry

  • Ability to Read and comprehend simple specifications, plans, and shop drawings.
  • Ability to Interpret and make decisions in conformance within established policies and practices.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in written formats to coworkers and public
