Heating & Refrigeration Mechanic II or III

Austin, TX

The Facility Management mission is to provide a safe and clean environment by planning and delivering professional services, which are sustainable and supported now and in the future. The Facility Management HVAC program supports this in the performance of maintenance, repairs and installation of heating and air conditioning systems throughout Austin Water Utility facilities. We utilize industry best practices to ensure equipment is operating at peak performances to minimize emergency call back repairs and maintain optimal indoor air quality.


Minimum Qualifications

Heating & Refrigeration Mechanic II

Education and/or Equivalent Experience: 

  • Education and Experience: Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus two years experience in repair and maintenance of residential and commercial heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment and systems.
  • Completion of accredited training in air conditioning and refrigeration systems may substitute for one year of the required experience.


Licenses and Certifications Required:

  • Must possess Texas Class C driver license in good standing.
  • EPA Refrigerant Recovery Certification.
  • Must be a registered HVAC Tech with Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.


Physical Requirements:

  • Continuous outdoor activity, frequent sitting, standing, walking, squatting, bending, twisting upper body, climbing, exposure to extreme heat, cold, noise, mechanical hazards, fume/odor hazards, occasional kneeling, crawling, carrying up to 50 lbs., lifting up to 50lbs., client/ customer contact, indoor activity, exposure to electrical hazards, explosive hazards, biological hazards, dust/mites hazards. May require employee to be medically cleared to wear respirator.




Heating & Refrigeration Mechanic III

Education and/or Equivalent Experience: 

  • Education and Experience: Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus four years experience in repair and maintenance of commercial/industrial heating, ventilation, air conditioning or refrigeration systems, including chillers.
  • Completion of accredited training in air conditioning and refrigeration systems may substitute for one year of the required experience.


Licenses and Certifications Required:

  • Texas Driver’s License in good standing
  • EPA Refrigerant Recovery Certification
  • Must obtain unrestricted Texas Air Conditioning License for City use within 120 calendar days of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Experience: 


  • Valid Texas A/C & Refrigeration Contractors License (A or B)
  • Experience in residential and commercial heating, ventilation, and air conditioning to include rooftop package units, VAV systems, boilers, and control systems
  • Experience using welding torches, electric meters, refrigeration gauges, refrigerant recovery machines and similar tools
  • Direct work experience with high-voltage electrical equipment in a commercial or industrial setting
  • Experience working with Trane Tracer Building Automation System or other similar building control system


Pay Range

This position will be filled at one of the following levels depending upon candidate qualifications:


  • Heating & Refrigeration Mechanic III: $25.25 – $29.94 per hour


  • Heating & Refrigeration Mechanic II: $23.62 to $27.42 per hour



Hours

Monday through Friday; 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Work hours may vary as determined by business need.


Position is considered essential and may require work on weekends, holidays, overtime, and call back for emergency response.
