Summary

The starting salary range is $18.52-$19.75/hr. 


Summary: Under the direction of the Street Foreman, the Maintenance Worker II provides a variety of maintenance duties which include construction, repair and maintenance of streets, public rights-of-way, and storm water detention ponds, and drainage systems. Worker must be in compliance with safety procedures and usage of safety equipment. Maintenance Worker II may act in absence of a Crew Leader to oversee crew activity at a worksite to ensure safety is being met, will also help train new employees.


Organizational Relationships:

Reports to: Street Foreman 

Other:  Works closely with the other crew members, Public Works Assistant Streets & Drainage Director, Public Works Director, other departments, outside federal, state and local governments and the general public.

Essential Duties & Required Qualifications

Essential Duties and Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

  • Performs general maintenance for street, drainage and rights-of-ways.
  • Prepares equipment, vehicles, and tools for work assignments.
  • Ability to operate all machinery needed to perform assigned duties.
  • Common knowledge of duties performed in construction and maintenance of streets and roadways.
  • Apply crack seal to roadways.   
  • Assist in the removal of concrete, setting forms, typing steel, and finishing concrete.
  • Repair guardrail and bridges.
  • Assist in repairing storm drain pipe; inlets, etc.
  • Remove debris and other obstructions from drainage right of way.
  • Perform necessary mowing and trimming maintenance where assigned.
  • Ability to work well with the public and fellow Co-workers at all times.
  • Communicate effectively and courteously with the public and all other city employees in person, in writing, and by telephone.
  • Ability to work outdoors in extreme heat or cold temperature swings and during inclement weather; exposed to dust, fumes, and loud noises.
  • Knowledge and ability to set up secure work zones using cones and barricades  
  • Pick-up litter and debris, remove graffiti.
  • As an essential employee, you are subject to after-hours call outs for emergency situations which can include icy weather, flooding, police department assistance, etc., including a required on-call rotation, and special events.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education and/or Experience:

High School Graduation or G.E.D. and two to three years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Preferred Education and/or Experience:

Three or more years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Texas Commercial Driver License (CDL), Class A with an air brake endorsement or the ability to obtain one within six months of employment.

Equipment, Machines, Tools and Work Aids: 

Ability to operate a dump truck, bucket lift truck, motor grader, backhoe, skid loader, roller, grader, gradall, and small hand tools, chainsaw, shovel, two-way radio, telephone, computer, measuring devices; ability to drive a vehicle to and from various work sites.

Steel-toed leather boots, steel-toed rubber boots, gloves, eye protection, head protection, safety vest, and ear protection.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds and push, pull, drag up to 150 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
